August 18 Newport Beach, OR
At the rate we went today, we'll have to rest from our vacation when we get home. First we drove to Astoria, OR. We saw the Astoria Column and from there we could see the bridge that comes over the Columbia River from Washington. We drove over it several years ago. That was enough. I don't know how long it is, but it feels miles long. It's very high in the air. A Freighter can go under it and with twice as much room to spare. And it makes a big corner at the top of the bridge. You have to see it to believe it. We drove a van over it, so I felt higher and very scared.
We went to Fort Clatsop, the fort where Lewis and Clark spent a winter. Then we went to see where they made their salt at Canon Beach. What a job that must have been to boil all that sea water clear down to salt.
We just followed the highway down highway 101 and stopped at anything that caught our interest. We went to Cape Meyers to see that lighthouse. It was cold and windy there. I wish we would have worn our jackets instead of leaving them in the car.
We finally had our second meal at 6:00 at Tillamuck. It specialized in sea food, no vegetarian dishes. We got their sides of potatoes and vegetables. It turned out very good.
We're staying in Newport Beach. We have an Ocean View room. It was dark when we got here. We can see a working lighthouse from our room. I'm sure that we will enjoy the view tomorrow.
